I'm starting my list a little late this year. If you're interested, you can see my list of books read in 2010, Last year I read mostly fluff, which I enjoy tremendously. I don't know that this year will be any different. There have been years when I have set goals for reading more books (definitely not my goal this year), reading fewer books (to encourage myself in other activities) or reading more non-fiction, which is almost always something I feel I should do. Our mailbox has an invisible target painted on it. Within a year or two of moving in, someone had run into it, crushing the door so that it wouldn't open or close. We replaced it. Less than a year later, some repairmen were working on our neighbor's house across the street. They had a big truck with them which they proceeded to back into our mailbox, bending the post and crushing the box.

I took them to task and they replaced the box, but the post was still bent. A few years ago, we got tired of looking at it, and replaced the entire setup with a new post and a new box. Was that before or after someone set off a string of firecrackers inside our mailbox? I can't remember anymore.

Anyway, not long after that, someone went joyriding down the block, hitting all the mailboxes they could reach with a baseball bat. They bent the side of our mailbox and the post was left once again at a slight angle, but it still worked with a little effort, so we kept using it.

We came home in the wee hours of the new year to find our mailbox looking more tipsy than any reveler about town. Someone had hit it low enough that the box wasn't crushed, but the pole was listing wildly and the door wouldn't stay shut.

Scott dug it up today, used a sledgehammer to straighten the support pole, and reset it. It looks almost normal again.

We used to think that some of our neighbors were just indulging a fancy for making solid brick monuments to house their mailboxes. Now we know better.

Last week I was the lucky recipient of a bag of lemons. I love lemons, but I can't eat them too often or my teeth hurt.

Why, yes, I do speak from experience! :-)

I was talking with one of my friends the other day and mentioned my love of lemons. She said that she eats lemons too. We compared our preferences and discovered that we did not eat them the same way.

For those who eat lemons as lemons, what is your favorite method?

I made lemon meltaway cookies last week, and they were a hit. I've eaten a couple raw and enjoyed every bit of juice and pulp. The problem is that I still have a bag of lemons left. I'll probably make a pie with some of my bounty, but that will only make a dent in the mass.

Would any of you like to share your favorite lemon recipe?

We just got home with the new vacuum. It went together very easily and spouse and DS2 are field testing it on various carpets and hard surfaces now. I think I should let them experiment to their hearts' content, don't you?

It's purple! It swivels! It's very light!

Only down side so far is that the cord only reaches far enough to do one room at a time.

I have the gardening bug. I have a small raised bed filled with good soil and compost. This produced some excellent lettuce, peppers, tomatoes and basil last year.

The weather just took a turn for the beautiful here in Sacramento, and I started getting antsy about getting something in the ground. Or at least getting something planted.

I had read recently about growing potatoes in containers, and decided that I would experiment a little this year. I had a well-drained bucket, some potting soil, and potatoes that were so eager to grow that they were sprouting in the kitchen.

I headed out, armed with my camera, ready to document the great potato planting of 2009.

It is extremely difficult to photograph a matte black bucket without having everything around it overexposed. I must have taken a hundred pictures, trying two different lenses and every setting adjustment I could find on my Nikon, even giving it a go with my Cybershot, before I gave up in disgust.

Time was running out and there was planting to do!

I planted the potatoes in shallow soil in the container and set it in the garage to sprout. I'll check it every day or two to see how it's doing.

All that frustration needed some outlet, so I headed out to my raised bed to clear the palm fronds that were keeping the weeds down and to turn the soil in preparation for planting.

I had a little compost from my first attempt at a pile last year, so I added that in as well, then tromped into the house to grab the Mortgage Lifter tomato plant I'd found at the hardware store and the pepper plants I had bought at the same time. These are in the ground and ready to go.

I've only grown Mortgage Lifter tomatoes once. I bought the plant at my local farmers market, but didn't have a garden to put it in at the time. I cleared a little space in the yard and stuck it in the ground without any further prep. Strangely enough, it produced, and I loved the texture and the flavor of its tomatoes. I hadn't seen any seeds or plants around since then, so when I saw it at the store I nabbed one and plopped it right in my cart. I'm eager to see how it does in better soil.

All this to say, don't expect photo updates on my potatoes until I plant some in less photographically challenging containers.

So, Lexi has a snippet of a movie stuck in her head and she can't remember where it's from. She doesn't know anything about the film except that there's a scene where some characters go into a place like an art gallery, but instead of paintings, there are photographs of people's butts, each bearing a picture of a country's flag. She thinks these were the flags of the countries of origin for each subject.

Does this ring a bell with any of you? She's asked everyone she knows, tried finding it online, and I've even phoned my movie guru friend, all to no avail. Any ideas?

Can we fit a full-sized car, three motorcycles, and a smart car in a (cluttered) two-car garage?

Taking on this challenge tonight were Scott and Chris. The Avalon was parked on the side previously reserved for the Taurus. I guess that officially demotes it to "old car" status even thought it won't be paid off for another four months.

The Maxim, which is currently a project bike, is against the opposite wall, and Chris' V-Strom is nestled next to it. There is a space for John's Boulevard, but he's still at class.

It's a tight fit length-wise since Chris' bike is nearly as long as the smartfortwo, but if you put the smart in neutral and pull it (easily a one-person job) within a couple inches of the bike, then everything should fit.

I'm not taking a picture tonight. John hasn't arrived back to complete the puzzle and I've already settled in for the evening. I may try for one tomorrow. If everything does really fit.

Oh, wait. I just heard John's bike. Maybe I'll get my shoes on after all.
